Sometimes the best way to relax is to get away. However, that doesn’t mean you have to shell out major cash for a lavish experience in a place far, far away. Sometimes your very own backyard can offer an amazing experience. That’s exactly what we opted for as we enjoyed our very first staycation in Durham, N.C. We had the opportunity to be hosted by The King’s Daughters Inn and now have an even greater appreciate for the hidden gems Durham has to offer.
When you go to The King’s Daughters Inn, don’t skip on the history lesson. You won’t have to do much digging. Simply asking the staff about the history of the inn will open a conversation about its rich past. If you want the real low down, ask for Denel. Grab a cup of coffee. Take it all in. We sat down with Denel in one of the parlors to learn more about KDI. There is so much history behind these walls. If you want the full story, make a visit. You’ll have to settle for the CliffsNotes version today.
Back in the 19oo’s, The International Order of King’s Sons and Daughters was an organization that carried out extensive charity projects across the city of Durham. A decade later, the Duke family donated land across from the university to the charity society. The charity then opened up a residence hall for elderly, needy and homeless women. The women who worked tirelessly day in and day out providing services to the sheltered women where known as The King’s Daughters. Also fun fact, The King’s Daughter’s Inn is one of the very first skyscrapers ever built in Durham! The construction of the building would help pave the way for how skyscrapers were built as downtown Durham expanded.
While at The King’s Daughter Inn, we had the pleasure of staying in the honeymoon suite AKA The Trinity. KDI is hot spot for weddings in Durham and I wouldn’t be surprised if were due to the beauty of the honeymooon suite. First impressions as we walked into room were nothing short of WOW. The room is swallowed up by the natural light provided by the attached private sunroom. Another really cool thing about The King’s Daughters Inn is all of the rooms are unique. When a room isn’t housing a guest, visitors can walk through and look around. It’s like a mini museum. It’s also a great way to scope out what room you want to stay in next time.
You really get this grand feel as you walk in. Everything has this vintage look. From the headboard, to the pillows, to the little touches like the lamps and dressers. This isn’t your plain Jane hotel room in the slightest! One of the cutest touches for me was the little desk area that held stationary. The desk itself was vintage chic. With this inn being an older building my first thought was the bathroom situation would be community bathrooms. However, to my absolute delight, every room contains its own private bathroom which is a plus. Our suite even had a double vanity which scored this place even more brownie points!
The Trinity has a BEAUTIFUL sunroom attached to the bedroom. All of the windows let in so much light and the room was perfect for relaxing and reading a book or even taking a nice little afternoon nap. We invited some friends over and had wine and snacks before heading downtown. It was so nice we’re plotting how to rent out a wing of KDI with our friends to have a little “block party.” Overall, I just keep going back to why would you book a hotel when you can stay in style at a local inn or bed and breakfast?!
The Overall Experience
Talk about fancy! What really sets The King’s Daughters Inn apart from a traditional hotel stay is the quality of service. The staff at the inn keeps it traditional and classic. You don’t get turndown service at your run of the mill Hilton. During turndown, they offer chocolate truffles and wine. I mean, come on! What could be more relaxing than after a long week settling in with chocolate and libations?
Breakfast was amazing! Not only do they offer a beautiful continental breakfast set up for visitors on the go, they also offer a sit down breakfast option. They have rotating breakfast specials, so don’t forget to check out the chalkboard! We also need to talk about the granola they make in house…y’all. The granola is perfect. Enjoy it by itself, as a cereal with milk, or in yogurt. We loved the granola so much we bought a bag to take home. No regrets.
Another service I loved was teatime. How cute is this set up?! Randy had a coffee tray delivered while I had afternoon tea. Again, the staff just takes it to the next level with the beautiful china and the delivery right to your room. Nothing beats kicking up my feet while sipping on earl grey, pinkies up!
Go, go, go! Time is running out. July is a slow month for the inn, so in order to fill the rooms, they have a special offering going in July. All of the rooms are discounted to $150 a night! Talk about a steal. So whether you want to try out a beautiful room for a staycation of your own or if you’re having friend and family come in to town and want to offer a beautiful lodging experience that isn’t your couch… The King’s Daughters Inn’s July special is the way to go!
Also, be sure to follow them and their sister property, The Mayton Inn! They have some amazing events happening in the community. If you’re a fan of jazz, you’ll love the block party KDI has planned for August!
